In 2004, I started painting these angels. I was living in New Orleans then and was really getting into Southern folk art, in particular the work of Bill Hemmerling. Also in the mix is my interest in Austrian art and iconography, and who knows what else. . .
Mainly, though, I wanted to create angels that were warm and companionable, rather than the ones often depicted looming in the background.
Painted on discarded wood, each piece has a history even before I get to it. The angels' forward gaze and simple gestures, such as the hands-together "Namaste" pose, are reminders that there is divine light within us all.
Each original work in the Angel series is untitled. The number shows the order in which it was created.
I paint other things too: colorful cityscapes and critters such as turtles, lizards, dragonflies, chickens, etc.
